A lovely visit to a festive Expresso TV studio to A lovely visit to a festive Expresso TV studio to chat about colic:

Remember that colic :
- is excessive fussiness/ crying in an otherwise well, thriving baby
- usually starts at 2-3 weeks of age and ends around 4 months
- is harmless to the baby
- represents an immature gut AND an immature brain!
- does not respond well to medications!
- the baby needs a calm environment, lots of holding and white noise
- parents need to accept help so that they get enough rest!
- this is tough!
But this too shall pass.

Finally-a week of school holidays- and hopefully a Finally-a week of school holidays- and hopefully a “circuit break” for the waves of infections which have risen and fallen throughout our very long winter!

You see- infections are like waves in many ways:
- some are large and last long, some are short and over quickly
- sometimes many small waves following in quick succession can join together to form a large, complicated wave or a complicated infection… that’s why some kids get sicker 1-2 weeks into a virus or it feels as if the “coughing has never ended” as they merge from one wave into another.
- sometimes we sit in a stormy sea in which the waves are coming from every direction- and really cannot be avoided- such as the typical crèche syndrome in little kids bombarded by snotty noses.

Over time, we develop our “life jackets” of immunity to ward off the waves- but little children still have to develop that- so a series of viral illnesses is really the norm.

#allergiceyedisease - don’t blink over it! Thi #allergiceyedisease - don’t blink over it!

This little boy from my clinic at Red Cross Hospital is smiling- despite red watery eyes- because he can see again! He has an allergic eye disease called VKC (#vernalkeratoconjunctivitis ), which, if left unchecked, can lead to loss of sight. Just 2 months ago he was almost blind- but with specialist care he can see again- but not everyone is as lucky.

Itchy, red eyes need to be taken seriously.
